Nightshade Records launches with its first vinyl release, and the debut edition comes via co-curators Kieran Jandu and Hugo Maher. This three-track EP straddles the ethereal cross-section of dub minimal, breaks, and more peak-time moods; there is also the massive added bonus of Jay Tripwire being given free rein on remix duties.
For our premiere today, we head straight to the Jay Tripwire remix of “Dynamics” and we find an extended reworking that has been given the entire B side. Where the original version from Kieran Jandu & Hugo Maher on side A is more upbeat and direct with the drum programming and energy levels, Jay takes these ideas and distils them into a long-form trippy journey.
Roomy percussion hits spread out from their central point as swaggering hats fizz in the background. The vocal sample in its original format travels in multiple directions, but at the hands of Jay Tripwire it moves between timelines all at once. Where the original version is a straight-up dancefloor killer, the extended remix from Jay is manipulated into a dubbed-out minimal monster.
Completing this first release from Nightshade Records is A2 track “Double A”. Dovetailing nicely with both “Dynamic” and its sterling remix from Jay Tripwire, this track edges down an equally dubby minimal / breaks route. Lush synth washes are met with glitchy percussion and whirring vocal clips to produce a more experimental side of the pairing’s production style.
With Keiran’s extensive history in the industry, his ear for a wicked track served him especially well during his tenure at Phonica Records; he now plies his trade at Eastern Bloc, where you can find Keiran and Hugo in action together when they welcome Jay Tripwire on Friday, November 27th.
