After the last edition of Raru Cultural Movement with OG Silat Beksi, the Barcelona-based imprint returns with its next edition. Hitting their fifth release, Raru has enlisted the talents of another legend of our scene, Christian Burkhardt.
With all tracks on the EP having that distinct Burkhardt funk laced throughout, we begin with A1 track “Amusement”. Multilayered from the outset, Christian weaves a multitude of elements with ease, from jazzy horn stabs, effected vocal samples, percussion loops, and piano riffs; this is classic Burkhardt from start to finish.
Title track “Fidshidat” is next on side A, and we find Christian in minimal roller territory, and we can imagine his extensive studio being used to great effect here. A reduced groove being passed through his impressive analogue gear until just the right amount of dirt has been passed on. It is then added to an undeniable guitar bassline that works the track until the very end.
Flipping over, you will find “Supersonic”, a much more melodic cut but again very much in the style of one of minimal music’s original shining stars. Looped-up percussion keeps the ear trained while background atmospheres shift and bend in subtle ways, creating a hypnotic drift.
Rounding out another unmissable release from Raru Cultural Movement is the pounding “High Three”. The relentless kick thuds, but soon steps back into the shadows once the synths and percussion click into place. A true masterclass in mixing, Christian Burkhardt extends his impeccable discography with a collector’s item in RU005.
