Mayor of Bowl-Air returns to preside over the second edition of Principauté de Bowl-Air. His Air-ness, DJ Bowlcut, not to be confused with Michael Jordan, steps up with two original tracks of his own as well as two reworkings, one from Furz and Slowmouth.
We roll out our review of PBAVINYL002 with a hot pick of the EP DJ Bowlcut’s original version of “Dig This”. The rave stabs take pride of place in the arrangement here, and the rave connotations even influence the cover artwork as it references one of the first K-pop acts to introduce rave sounds to Korean audiences — Seo Taiji and Boys.
Over on side B, Furz takes aim at “Dig This”, and while he dispenses with the ravey stabs, he adds in a plethora of other vintage sounds, namely the old skool synth / bass that was just as popular at the time. The energy levels also take a spike here too with his trademark grooves and pitched-down basslines.
Delivering a bit of a contrast to this, A1 sees a more minimal outing on “Falling”. The sampling on the vocal is great and really adds to the mood of the track. This gives serious movement around the probing bass tones that undulate throughout the track.
Another mainstay of the South Korean underground community, Slowmouth keeps with the program, maintaining the groove-heavy style of “Falling”. He opts to add an airy element to the proceedings and allows the vocal sample to run in its entirety, but with some added otherworldly tweaks.
