There is very little known about new artist OddJob and their even lesser-known imprint. What we do know is that the label was conceived on a mountaintop at a festival with friends, and the four-track EP will only be available on vinyl.
We take aim firstly at A1 “The Time Is Now”, and from the outset the track is bursting with character. From the off-kilter percussion, jazzy piano rolls, and wonky synths that bow in and out of view. At every turn, there is a new element for the ear to latch onto, and when the instantly recognisable arps of a house anthem are teased in before fully emerging it is clear that this label aims to be that bit different.
This sense of right wrongness carries through the EP, and A2 “Plane ??” keeps the energy levels peaking as well as the matching wonkiness. The plinky plonky synths that run throughout the track seem to be a nod to minimal of the 00s, but with added madness of random vocal samples and sound FX, yet somehow it works. Well.
Flipping over, “Endless Night” offers up more of a lucid dream where detuned chord stabs are met with powerful organ chords. The resulting soundscape grows to incomprehensible levels, yet the balanced BPMs somehow temper the energy. Completing the rave-tinged side of the record is “Enter”. A more progressive, emotive acid track that builds a breathy tension throughout the initial part of the track before unleashing its full power.
