Tokyo-based artist Shimpei Watanabe returns with the next edition of his COCAG Records, and he has delivered a double-feature vinyl adventure. Instead of filling each side of the record, Shimpei has opted to strip things back and dedicate each side to just one track.
With the EP from Shimpei Watanabe split across two tracks, each side is given the space to breathe and unfold naturally. A1 belongs to “Take Take”, a long-form jam that encounters shades of breaks, minimal house, and some lush hip house elements. The spacey pads are a joy to listen to and really soften the edges of the raucous percussion and pumping grooves.
Flipping over, we have B1 track “BYOB”, and the minimal side of Watanabe takes centre stage. Rattling percussion is used to great effect here as the full side of the record is utilised to create a hypnotic soundstage. Dropping the thudding kick in and out crafts just the right amount of tension needed for the incoming paddy stabs. The accompanying synths work especially well here too, and the result is an upbeat weapon that seldom differs from the original idea but does so exceptionally well.
