Melcure returns to action, and it is lucky number thirteen for the label that has had many highlights since forming. Taking the lead on their next release is a combined team of co-founders and artists who are more than deserving of their billing. Taking their place in the VA lineup is co-founders Dani Casarano, Felipe Valenzuela, as well as Matias Puentes and Ildec.
Beginning our look at this excellent release, we pick up with B2 track “Bassmod” from co-founder Dani Casarano and Matias Puentes. Taking a less obvious approach, the pair have shunned the normal kicky heavy club sound for a more refined 80s direction. Leaning heavily on a collection of snares, from the verby to the noise and the attention-grabbing snare rolls, there is a passing resemblance to Prince here. It is here that this similarly ends as the bass guitar notes come into their own and the moody synth tones begin to take hold.
Also on side B is another Casarano collab, and this time with fellow co-founder in Felipe Valenzuela. This duo of artists have been pivotal in the musical output of Melcure and Felipe’s recent live performance set light to our stage at Gottwood with this addition to the label. “Odyzer” keeps with the 80s theme (slightly) with some very tidy percussion, but it is all about that bassline. Snappy rhythms keep it moving very nicely but the energy is undeniable from start to finish and it spread easily through the crowd at the Walled Garden at Gottwood.
Side A has even more heat with Cosmic JD turning in a certified heater in “Just Smoked it, I Didn’t Know”. Swaggering rapped vocals are met with a jazzy bassline and a sublime middle section in between rounds of bass heavy action. Completing the VA is star in the making Ildec. The Spaniard has crafted quite the arsenal with countless bombs to his name and his hypnotic groover “Give Me” is no different.
