You might know him as Ray Bennett, but these days he goes by Camagu, the traditional middle name of Monde Camagu Mpumlwana. It’s a change that matches where his sound has progressed to, deeper into the underground and closer to home. From Cape Town, he makes music that is raw, smoky and a little lo-fi. Think deep 90s house, minimal techno with some Detroit-style grit, ambient detours, and odd club rhythms in between. His debut was 2020’s “Silo” EP on City Bowl Wax Network, and in 2025 he co-founded Safe Tapes with Mornway and Fvrger. It’s a label collective for forward-thinking South African electronic music, with no interest in the commercial side of things. At home, he’s a regular at Mødular, playing vinyl-heavy sets for a close-up crowd.
Camagu is next to provide the heat on our Free Download series with his track “DAM, DAT DJ”, and the above words on his style could not be any more accurate. The drifting grooves certainly have that lo-fi feel, while the paddy atmosphere signals more than a passing Detroit influence. The beats are impressively programmed and seem to land in the right place just at the right time, with a human touch that nudges everything just a little out of time, but not enough to muddy the waters one bit.
