Label owner and rising talent Funkytino is most assuredly a name to watch out for this year. Having just dropped his track ‘Need Ya’ on Rich NxT’s What’s NxT imprint he has been getting huge plays including the recent Fuse blowout at Printworks. It is now the turn of his own imprint Flip Finesse to take a turn in the sun. Flanked by remixes from Wodda and Silver (UK) he turns in a diverse array of tracks on his ‘Espresso Martini’ EP.
Our pick of the release is perky ‘Drifting Away’ and what better track to give a little piece of sunshine on a Sunday morning. The flecks of garage in the popping key notes keep the track light an airy while the punchy snare keeps things ticking. The sweet female vocal hook are teased into the mix early on and then fully revealed but reigned in to prevent the killer groove from being overshadowed.
Title track ‘Espresso Martini’ treads a similar path with garage infused percussion and the soulful vocal makes another appearance in a different guise. The third original offering from Funkytino sits nicely on a tuff synth bassline and makes use of some smart vocal chops and warps. A bit more deeper than the previous two works and all the better for it as Funkytino inserts hints of a different musical route to explore in future releases.
The final two tracks lie with remixes of lead track ‘Espresso Martini’ and first up is Wodda. Turning in a more stripped back version but with a slight turn on the BPM his deeper vision of the track builds nicely before dropping into a garage meets house hybrid. Silver (UK) bumps up the bpm’s further still with a riddim packed reworking and the clever use of filters really helps to build suspense for his drops to have maximum impact.
FF004 will be available on digital on March 20th.
