With the MAD Signal machine gathering pace, they now ready the second edition of their label. Co-founder Dumitrescu is in the hot seat for this chapter, and his “Club Funktion” EP carves out four cuts that skirt stripped-back techno, peak-time house, and dreamy electro.
For today’s premiere, we head straight to side B, where we find the disco-tinged “Lobocop”, and not to be confused with the metal-clad hero from the 80s, this is as slinky as they come. From the wiggly sound FX and underlying percussion to the sultry vocal clips, this one has all the elements to really shake the dancefloor.
Completing side B is “Nostaligic Video” and a serious nod to the robotic electro of Detroit and the pre-hip-hop era. Laser-capped beats cut through the deep bass stabs that emerge from the murk with ease. The accompanying 303 acid line and swathes of synths offer that wide-eyed vista that then cries out for the drop back into the groove. Dumitrescu happily obliges.
Flipping back over to side A, “Bass Funktion” is a step back towards the stripped-back techno sound that both Dumitrescu and Mihnea Rog have been pushing. No-nonsense grooves are the order of the day, as it is all about that huge tooly sound that easily decimates the dancefloor.
Completing the record is “Loophole”, and by far the most hypnotic track on the EP; there are plenty of layers to get lost in here. From the slightly fluted synth line, encapsulating bass tones, and the trance-inducing vocals, this tops off another top-flight release from MAD Signal.
