Jesse You heads to the Melbourne-based Entered Records with a four-track release exploring euphoric peak-time energy, as well as more tender, tripped-out after-hour moods. The Australian label launched back in 2023 with a fierce EP from Eya Records boss Jos.
Our premiere focuses on the A1, ‘Violet Expander’, a nimble, heads-down weapon with a fizzing energy that grabs hold from the opening bars. Bleepy melodies provide the hook, darting around a mean rhythm that gives the track plenty of forward momentum whilst staying in a minimalist vibe.
The production’s stripped-back quality gives it a particularly versatile nature. Jesse You is based in Seoul, a city with a vibrant music scene around devoted venues like Teller, very much focused on this versatile, minimalist sound.
Percussion remains tight and consistent while the melodic elements evolve rapidly, creating a sense of controlled chaos that could comfortably light up a huge festival floor just as easily as a smaller, more intimate room. It’s the kind of track that could sit neatly between minimalist selections, bringing a sudden injection of rave energy without completely changing the mood.
The suspense comes from the way Jesse You holds back the melodic elements, allowing each piece to develop patiently, whilst keeping enough character and movement in the loop. Momentum sustains itself via subtle shifts and repetition, making it a useful tool for selectors who favour a longer blend.
The flip takes a more euphoric turn with ‘Sorti’, a blossoming piece of club music where a catchy bass riff and hopeful chords bring a little more light to the dancefloor. ‘Planet Malfunction’ dips into more tripped-out after-hours territory with a wonky bassline and strange, pulsing melodies that gradually wash into a warm pad section.
Completing the release is Rudolf C’s mechanical overhaul of ‘Violet Expander’, pushing the original into more peak-time territory with a heavier, techno-leaning edge.
Across all four tracks, Entered Records delivers on the promise of a release that takes an unexpected detour. There is plenty of drive here, but also enough space for the tracks to work in different environments, making ENT002 a versatile addition to the label’s catalogue.
