Andy Luff’s Picnic Records imprint continues with the remit of putting out top-notch house and techno from a never-ending reserve of talented producers. This time, that honour falls to Italian artist Deyayu, who collates a killer four-track EP bursting with peak-time, electro-tinged energy.
We head straight to the meat of “Your Darkness”, and Deyayu adds more electro goodness to his growing discography with the A1 on this release. Muted bass tones and sinister synths are soon given new life by way of the pinpoint-accurate percussion. The synth stabs filter in and out of full view, thus revealing more and more layers of sound design. Side A is completed with the equally foreboding “Consciousness Trip”, but this added intensity only goes to strengthen the resolve of the release. Forlorn synths paint a picture of equal parts peak-time business and hope for the future.
Flipping over, “Night Dialogues” continues this fragile theme and further cements Deyayu’s ability to pen rocking tracks with an emotional intelligence that belies his years. Elongated synths segue between thudding beats as if finding the best route to cover the whole dancefloor in a balmy blanket of acidic sound. Finishing up the release with “Forbidden Paper” concludes this twilight trip through the various facets of PICNIC014, and the swan song of the record is perhaps the moodiest of them all.
