Manchester outfit OBP Music continue to forge ahead on behalf of UK-centric club sounds with their summer sampler. Their in-house artists Jelsen, Malachy, Simmo, and Stocked Up welcome Strike-E, Jude Lenihan, Tate, and Yoke to the plate for a piece of the action.
We could begin with any one of the tracks on OBP’s eight-track offering, but Strike-E’s Latin-tinged heater “The Loca Lady” has the edge and is already hitting the bumpiest floors hard. Vintage house grooves are given a turbo charge for modern heads, and the sultry vocals, dusty key stabs, and fluted synths are a deadly combination. Simmo is up next and “Cntrl” edges down a similar hazy path until his outrageous bassline swings into view. Stripped back and primed for battle, Simmo knows how to craft a route one banger and no mistaking.
OBP stamp their sound right across this VA, and Jude Lenihan gets the memo on “De’ Jah Voo “ with an angular bassline and rappy vocal that is tailor-made for memory-making moments on a packed dancefloor. Hitting the halfway mark, Stocked Up adds to the mix acid-ghetto squiggler “Work Dat Booty” along with Malachy’s tooly groover “Temptation”.
Snappy rhythms with a touch of dub come courtesy of mainstay Jelsen, and “Sunday Service” proves that every day can be the sabbath. Heading towards the business end of the release, “Addiction” from head turner Tate proves why he is so lauded by the likes of Josh Baker, Saorise, and Truly Madly. Intricate play between bassline, vocal snips, and subtle atmosphere shifts produce perhaps one of the most accomplished tracks on the release. The swan song of the release falls to Yoke and “Automatic Touch” with a soulful, garage-tinged houser. Empowering to be dialled up to 11 to get the full benefit of the killer sub bassline.
