Retrolog is next up on Outdom Records, the Parisian collective pushing a fierce sound through a series of Bandcamp releases, as well as showcases around the city with the likes of KRN and Hicham.
It’s a fresh sound that channels a sense of playfulness, merging a menacing energy with slick percussion and a throbbing party vibe. The third release featured back in April from Bok.p with a similar 90s, rave-inspired charm.
Retrolog is a frequent face on the label, presenting his sharp solo cuts as well as a shared project with Latent. We look at ‘Easy Moves’ on the next release, an ominous cut that walks the line between darkness and a fun, care-free vibe with a luscious effect.
You can imagine the likes of Francesco Del Garda and Quest melting heads with this one, slippery vocals, massive squelchy bassline and tripped-out sample work flashing in and out of the mix.
There is a strong cosmic theme to the label’s presence both sonically and in the visual side of their releases. Intricate patterns explore robotics and electricity, paired nicely with the feeling of urgency and charged music throughout the catalogue. The first track on this release is aptly titled ‘Robot Dance’.
It’s a unique strain of club music bubbling around the French collective. You can hear influences from 80s drum machines, electro’s cosmic breakbeat with a touch of disco and frivolity. ‘Locking’ brings a more tech-house driving cut with spicy acid lines and elegant chords.
The label stated Retrolog’s hip-hop background which comes through in the trakcs with a deftly use of sampling and drum patterns. Powerful music that will create memorable moments on the floor, and in the after-hours.
