Premiere: A1  – Franco Motta – Number 5 [OPW001]

The debut slice of wax, “Another Phunky Story”, from Miami-based Odd Pleasures brings exactly what the name suggests, a pleasantly odd venture that swings and squelches across a host of warm and funky tones.

With 3 originals from Franco Motta and a top remix from swing stalwart and veteran producer Franco Cinelli, this EP hits all the funked-out stops and panders to those looking to boogie or those looking for something more introspective.

Wiled-out funk meets classic vocal chops as Franco Motta delves out the grooves, each new element adding rhythm, snowballing into an unrelenting dancefloor force. “Number 5” ticks every classic box whilst bringing something fresh to the table, this retrospective approach is known to rock the boat and Franco’s delivery is second to none. You can really feel the fun being had on the keys as he brings heat to the jam in the latter part of the track, undeniable melodies that will see faces light up and dancefloors animated in true gun-finger, heads-down fashion.

Title track and A2 on the release, “Another Phunky Story” is set to tear it up, a fast-paced deep drive that traverses jazzy depths with psychedelic synth plucks and trippy effects cruising along to its intended destination, the dancefloor. Motta is really flexing his studio skills on this one as grooves ooze and bop with an air of grace.

Moving on to side B and B1 ‘Spoken Words’ takes a step back on the flipside, laid-back basses meander underneath a bubbly surface as carefully swung percs shuffle and snap keeping feet kicking and heads rocking. This afters-tinged slice of goodness also delivers that psychedelic phunk touch with the word “crazy” tickling the earbuds as the track approaches its climactic point.

B2 sees “Another Phunky Story” undergo metamorphosis through the very capable hands of Argentinian powerhouse Franco Cinelli. This complex reshuffle hears the groove reimagined as more of a daytime affair, with sprinklings of classic synth sounds, a full-kit workout and some cheeky vocal shots, this Phunky Story certainly has a lot to tell.

With this being Odd Pleasures’ first physical output, the record label and talent management agency have been cementing their presence in the scene through a successful series of digital releases as well as their ODDCAST Soundcloud mix series. The label has already seen remix work from some top names, with Sepp, Carebears and Alexis Cabrera all having had the call to arms to bring their magic to Odd Pleasures. If you dig your tunes highly swung, laid-back and downright grooving then do not sleep on Mr. Motta as he is definitely one to keep an eye on.
