SHIFT announces more details ahead of their marathon Memorial Day after party

The dialogue between Detroit’s mercurial industrial legacy and vibrant underground music scene speak to its creative and resilient soul. Music has always been core to its identity, but the electronic music it incubated uniquely expresses both Detroit’s engineering provenance and penchant for precision while narrating the frenetic emotionalism of its bipolar automotive experience. Nowhere in the city is this juxtaposition better articulated than in the Lincoln Factory. In anticipation of perhaps its purest such expression this Memorial Day Weekend, excitement abounds for SHIFT—a Detroit native event series, premiering its 24-hour homage to harmonizing the sounds from Detroit with its evangelists from around the world on May 26th.

The venue, known today as the Lincoln Factory, boasts a rich history dating back over a century. Originally constructed in 1908 for the Warren Motor Car Company, the facility lived many lives—as a manufacturing plant for luxury vehicles of the roaring twenties sandwiched between two tours of duty as a military armaments producer during both World Wars and of course as factory for assembling Lincolns before the outsourcing and neglect of the latter twentieth century led to its dilapidation, decay, and rebirth.

After decades of ignominious decline, a combination of industrious burners and fearless artists gathered under the full moon, a vision for a more vibrant tomorrow, Dreamtroit, the complex within which the Lincoln Factory was birthed, rose from the ashes and stands as a testament to Detroit’s resilience and creativity. Hosting SHIFT at this historic site bridges the city’s complex past with its dynamic present, offering a unique backdrop for a celebration of music and culture. Dreamtroit is also home to a growing network of creative spaces, including the Lincoln Street Art Park—which has become vital to the artistic identity of the neighbourhood.

While parties had already been happening in the area long before Lincoln Factory took shape, the current incarnation of the building holds something uniquely special within its walls. As we build toward the marathon SHIFT event on May 26th, more surprises are still to come—but one thing we can reveal now is the return of “The Freezer,” the venue’s standout outdoor space.

This space, co-hosted by Maher Daniel’s The Other Side and SHIFT, is a raw, open-air homage to rebellious escapism awash in vibrant graffiti, buttressed by exposed metal beams, and known for unforgettable sets. In its inaugural address, it played host to the now-legendary marathon performance by Theo Parrish. This year’s program is cut in much the same cloth albeit with an international flair, featuring extended sets from Craig Richards, O.BEE, Ohm Hourani, Sonja Moonear, Ryan Crosson, and Tomas Station, alongside a DJ performance from TOS boss Maher Daniel, SHIFT founder, Shaun Reeves, and special guests to boot.

Separated by the Freezer’s south wall is its intimate and minimalist counterpart: Trackside. Retaining the raw industrial DNA of the Lincoln Factory, Trackside has evolved into a key production and programming hub within the complex. Once the site of early underground gatherings, it now hosts a curated lineup of selectors in a close-quarter setting. This year, behind the decks you’ll find Aboudi Issa, Dana Ruh, Edo, Elizabeth, Igor Vicente, Jus Nowhere, Justin Shaffer, Matt Foley, Navbox, Roni Amitai, Stretch, and a brace of secret guests.

Elsewhere in the venue, the party continues across multiple spaces. The Upstairs Patio offers Kafkaesque gemutlichkeit in an exuberantly graffitied open-air arena, which will be hosted by Paris-based collective Yoyaku in celebration of its 10-year anniversary. Its special SHIFT lineup features Adi, Bruno Schmidt, Flabbergast (live/DJ), Magda, Maher Daniel (live), Salar Ansari, Sedef Adasï, Zeina, and secret guests.

Inside the Lincoln Factory’s eponymous main club room space, adorned in exposed brick, industrial LED bars, and serpentine commercial exhaust pipes, SHIFT seeks to stun with its high-fidelity sound system that will serve as the home base for the Visionquest stage. Visionquest curated a veteran lineup featuring ADMN, DJ Holographic, Francois Dillinger, Kate Simko (live), Lee Curtiss (live), Mike Ransom, and m.O.N.R.O.E. As one of underground dance music’s most influential triumvirates, Visionquest has spent over a decade redefining the boundaries of house and techno, both at home and abroad. This stage celebrates that legacy while spotlighting the artists coauthoring its next chapter.

SHIFT is the brainchild of Shaun Reeves, whose vision and direction continue to shape its evolution. Reflecting on what the Lincoln Factory represents, he shares: “Honestly, I think Lincoln Factory has the potential to become one of the most important spaces in the U.S. underground—not just in Detroit, but nationally.” He adds, “It’s got the energy, the story, the people—and if everyone involved keeps doing it right, I see it becoming an institution on the level of something like fabric or Berghain, but with its own Detroit spirit.

Final Phase Coming Soon…

With the full Lincoln Factory complex activated across multiple stages, there’s still more to come. A few surprise guests will be announced with the final lineup drop next week—this is only phase two of three. Stay tuned.
