Paris-based collective District 10 Edits return with the second volume of their vinyl series, once again digging into forgotten corners of music history and reshaping them for the dancefloor. Following the first release, which found support from respected selectors including Jane Fitz, Magda and Jonny Rock, D10EDITS002 delivers another three elusive cuts from the mysterious Unknown artist.
The featured A1, ‘Sans Toi’, reworks a French classic into a sleazy after-hours weapon. Sultry vocals remain front and centre, allowing the original character to shine through, while an arpeggiated bassline steadily keeps the sound system energy ticking over.
There is a whole sea of influence involved here. Synth pop, disco, house, new beat and a touch of acid all seem to feed into the arrangement, yet the production never feels overly busy. Instead, the Unknown artist keeps things relatively stripped back, giving the original elements enough room to bring the joy, while subtle edits and rhythmic additions reshape the track for the club.
Echoey vocal treatments give the record a hazy quality, with the voice drifting between the drums and bass rather than sitting rigidly on top. Rolling percussion provides a steady sense of movement, while minute details gradually emerge from the margins. There is something inherently nostalgic about the whole affair, but it avoids becoming a simple exercise in looking backwards.
The second volume follows a similar path across the flip. A1’s ‘Assoiffé’ keeps up the sensual vibe with a throbbing banger. Lustful vocals narrate a chuggy beat, almost Andrew Weatherall-esque. A2 slows the pace down, taking a post-punk relic and stripping it back into a broken beat affair in ‘Borderlien’. A dangerous, menacing bassline drives the track forward, while a subtle thread of acid gradually appears beneath the surface.
District 10’s identity behind these edits remains deliberately concealed, allowing the music to take precedence. It is a fitting approach for a project built around discovery, where the thrill comes from finding a forgotten track and hearing it transformed in a way that makes perfect sense years later.
