Having been running club based events for over six years MASS have welcomed to Leeds a very discerning roster of artists. As well as visiting talent in the shape of Vlada, Spacetravel, A², Gwenan and Alex Picone, MASS is built around a close-knit family of residents and creatives. It is this group of artists that make up the very first MASS vinyl edition under the VA of ‘Tales of Mabgate’.
We head straight to B1 where we find resident Nikol in blistering form for his first vinyl release and we are certain there will be plenty more to come. ‘Leon’ is a track that has sat dormant waiting to be launched into the world and with the fizzing open hi hats and the insistent bassline this track demands attention. Some smart vocal sampling gives real added depth and character to what is already a stripped back peak time bomb.
Rounding back to A1 and fellow resident Kepler showcases his cosmic breaks strain of his arsenal in ‘Dream Plant’. As you might expect from a Kepler creation the kicks are phat, the grooves are tight and the ability to shift the mind’s eye in many directions with the atmospherics at play while the thudding beats keep the body centered is a wondrous talent.
Midge Thomson steps up next with ‘Two Shy Crew’ and the filthy bassline that underpins the track is a monster. The filtering synth and shimmering stabs are just the ticket. Rounding out the release is Keefy G and the bass heavy, garage tinged ‘Tools For Le Car’. Speakers with this release are in big trouble as each track sports sub-woofer threatening bass, and this is a very good thing. As well as more Leeds based events on the horizon expect much more noise from MASS throughout 2023.
