Oven Club hit back with a second release on their titular label project, Oven Sound Records, after an emphatic, sold-out first release from co-owner, Sueezo, that succeeded in capturing the character and energy that is found at the inimitable Oven Club. It’s lovely to see such a bond formed between the club and its patronage – something that is very much being lost in the spotify-skip era as super-fandom overrides the classic connect between clubber and club with lots of newer ravers fixated on chasing the big stars. The Valencian hotspot is bolstering down on the community they have created by entering the world of wax as they celebrate their sound, furthering this notion for this next release they’ve called upon two veteran producer/DJs who have more than cemented their own contributions to the scene over the years.
Chilean-born, Berlin-based Felipe Valenzuela joins Frankfurt export and Berlin-mainstay Dorian Paic as the pair deliver an expectedly refined and slick 4-tracker – “A way to make it work” EP. Whilst the title may suggest some amount of head scratching in the studio, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth as the pair go off-radar, journeying into the unknown – armed only with 4 finely-tuned ears and a wealth of experience.
We premiere B1. on the release – “It’s Time” which lulls us into an illusory realm as well-structured elements guide us through ethereal plains as bodies of drums and melodies calmly stack and switch as we glide through the wormhole. Tight and expertly crafted motifs carry us on this introspective outing as moonbeams shine brightly, glinting in the mesmeric rhythms.
A1. “String Theory” a spaced-out trip that seamlessly blends elements from house, electro and techno, packing a healthy dose of synths that reiterate and replicate as they simulate various vibrational states for some hypnotic charm, no doubt be hearing this one in the late hours of the night.
Title-track and A2. “A way to make it work” hears tingling vocoder chops atop soulful keys that interject amongst an infectious amalgamation of basslines and rhythms that rip.
Uplifting intergalactic oddities continue flipside as “The Lost Track” finds itself residing amongst the space debris, punctuated by host of zaps and resonant tones as an array of sweet harmonies guide our path through as it rounds off the EP.
Lovely second output from the good folks at Oven Club, looking forward to seeing more members of the Oven family featuring in future.
