We are well up to speed with the skills that Ukrainian artist JOSS possesses and his Artreform label has provided many highlights on these pages. Most recently his label has provided stunning moments such as Sapurra’s ‘Feeling+’ as well JOSS’s own ‘I Want You To Give It A Listen’. However, it is Swiss label Relikt that is the site of our next premiere.
Relikt is also no stranger to Trommel as we have before featured the off-shoot label, but it is the main imprint that we have set our sights on and they present a VA packed with quality with ‘Deep In Your Eyes’ from JOSS coming out on top.
We head straight to A2 where we find JOSS rolling out crisp kicks and equally tidy percussion. This is a calling card of JOSS and the tight woven beats all sit perfectly in their pocket waiting to do their job. The deep bubbling bassline that creeps into view is more than capable of carrying the track on its own but JOSS has other plans. More and more element sneak into the mix but not for too long as to overcrowd things. The great thing about JOSS is that as much as his tracks kick in all the right frequencies he also manages to deliver a musical journey and the higher pitched synths that snake their way through the track add such a nice contrast to the beats.
The previous A1 track ‘Daybreak’ from Luke Hazell treads similar ground but in a much more upbeat, skippy fashion. The track title could not suit this track any better and the shimmer pads and positive synth notes conjure up all manner of sun filled memories future and past.
Flipping over and Hurlee’s ‘Winter Deepness’ filtered synths wrap around the punctuated beats perfectly. The enveloping delays threaten to engulf the track but not before they back off ready to set off in a new direction. Rounding out this impressively crafted VA is Evock’s ‘Flora’ and again the upfront house vibes are strong and the effected synth stabs cut right through the mix to bring home a nicely rounded release.
