Who These Records keep things as cryptic as the big question mark stamped on each record would suggest, as they gear up for their debut vinyl outing.
Coming out of Buenos Aires, the Argentinian label is set to focus on artist anonymity, downright dancefloor sounds and no-nonsense tracks that will have you forever guessing the artists behind them. This concept lands well with us, as label-whoring and big-name-bias are at an all-time high, so for labels to put the onus back on the tracks included and to omit the artist’s name is a veritable breath of fresh air in the current climate.
We share A1. from the flipside, “Under Control” as the artist calls upon sleazed-out basslines that really bring the funk as they work in tandem with a host of percussion, samples and stabs that really animate and hook us in as they inject infectious bursts of rhythm. Slick, stripped-back rhythmic goodness that sends heels and toes right to the front as the grooves come in strong.
Rather fittingly for Who These Records, they are teasing it in, one track at a time and not an artist name or even a hint in sight! A1. track “Look At Me” offers no further clues as to the identity of the artist behind the track, but it does offer a finely weighted groover. Making great use of the pitched vocals and ravey stabs that reminds us of Ricardo’s legendary weapon “Logohitz”.
B1. track “Storyteller” is a much more subdued affair but no less groovy. Forlorn, drawn-out pads paint a lush soundscape image from where tender synth ripples dip in and out of view. With not much info available at the time of going to print, you will just need to wait – as we hear good things come to those who do!
With early support coming from Arapu, Priku, Djebali, Jorge Savoretti, Tripmastaz and more, it’s safe to say that’s a real stamp of approval.
