Since we premiered the title track from TC80’s 2018 long player ‘Play’ the French Berlin-based artist and his co-founded Sequalog label have gone from strength to strength. Firstly, TC80 is as accomplished working on other people’s tracks as he is his own and has countless mastering credits on his rap sheet. Where he finds the time to tweaks the dials for other people as well as cropping up on esteemed labels like Cabaret Recordings, Blank State, and of course his own Sequalog. It is the latter that houses his latest effort ‘Open Source’ EP and the electro-tinged breaks and house weapons hit the nail right on the head.
Opting to go straight to B1 our coverage picks up the release with ‘Fusion Energy’ and TC80 can be found in fine fettle. Rattling hats and delayed zaps are soon fused with noise snares but not long before one of his signature deep funky basslines makes an appearance. A sublime concoction of synth layers’ dance in time with each creating a cosmic conversation of sound and the result is yet another top drawer TC80 brand of up-tempo house.
Heading back to A1 ‘Open Source’ dials up the planetary vibes and the grooves and bassline are both beefed up considerably. A2 ‘Hacker’ also benefits from a tuned-up bassline and ominous synth work creeps in and out of the breakbeat led mix. ‘Unified Tech’ over on B2 also features TC80’s muscular breaks with a hint of 80’s-esque synth lines and a dash of acid. In keeping with previous and most probably future Sequalog releases TC80 and cohort Etienne know exactly how to get the most out of their gear and the game plan seems to be going exactly how they figured as releases from these two artists are best in class.
