Premiere: B1 – Scatterbaux – Chamber 27 [USR020]

Berlin-based label Undersound Recordings have always prided themselves on championing up-and-coming and lesser known talent. It’s a philosophy that’s taken the label far since it’s first release in 2015, with them now approaching their 20th release, a four track EP from American producer Scatterbaux.

After their past three releases from rising producers Sohrab, Generali Minerali, and J. Mono, Scatterbaux continues the flow of quality perfectly. There’s little information about the producer online, but the quality of his Codex 2 EP speaks for itself without knowing anything more about the producer themselves.

Across ‘Codex 2’, B1’s ‘Chamber 27’ might just best showcase Scatterbaux’s talent for creating intricate and complex tracks that are still firmly dancefloor-focused. The down ‘n’ dirty bassline worms it’s way into your head and is bound to be stuck there for hours, whilst the glossy melody illustrates how deep Scatterbaux can push his productions. A face-scrunching 303 intermittently wiggles it’s way through Chamber 27 introducing an air of suspense and purpose to the track.

Leading the way for the rest of the EP is ‘Ghost On The Wing’, a somewhat delicate track by electro’s standards but one that is as deep as it is intricate. The slithering 303 and gliding melody beautifully blur the lines between melancholy and menace for a tear-jerker of a track to close the night. ‘Acid Squabble’ follows in the footsteps of it’s A-side predecessor, maintaining a twitching acid line but enlists a more haunting melody for a more downtempo effect.

Rounding off the EP is ‘Womp Bucket’, a quintessential acid-electro combination that moves at a breakneck speed, perfectly compiled rattling drum-programming and even acid modulation to make your head spin.
