Premiere: A2 – Julie Marghilano – Walking Dub [RAWAX025LTD]

Julie Marghilano is next up on the legendary Rawax label, shaping the 25th release of their LTD series.

Rawax has long been a staple in the underground community, hosting a prolific back catalogue which features the likes of Ricardo Villalobos who recently repressed the classic ‘808 The Bassqueen’ to celebrate 25 years since it’s first release. The label is a strong source of inspiration for many artists, regularly inviting more up and coming artists to their multiple sub-labels, as well as many legends from the label’s esteemed history.

Julie Marghilano fits the bill in this sphere of dedication to the music. Born in Las Vegas and based in Berlin, Julie is a a multi talented musician and performer – trained classical violinist and label owner of Sol Asylum which regularly showcase at Hoppetosse and CDV.

Four tracks form this diverse EP, bringing a dash of breakbeat, fiery acid lines and luscious vocals all with an ear to the dance floor. We look at the A2’s ‘Walking Dub’, a stripped back cut which carries that weightless-like energy that comes from dub-inspired atmospheres. Stabby chords bring a sense of urgency to the track, slotting between slick and snappy percussions that nod to a clear obsession with rhythm.

It’s the kind of track that holds enough punch to keep the party going at peak times, whilst holding a sense of fragility and emotion through the subtle melodies that would be very welcome in the after-hour situation. Percussions unfold with an effortless, jam-like feel as if they were recorded in a live session, flirting with a sneaky acid line bringing a sense of menace to the mix.

‘Im the B…’ taps into a more UK vibe in the A1, flexing garage-y drums with a buoyant bassline and sultry chord sequence bringing the energy. The B-side meanders into breakbeat territory with clever vocal samples and a massive sub bass ready for the sound system. ‘Blow Up Bass’ does exactly that to conclude this record, huge low end, subtle drum patterns and a very much club-ready vibe.
