Premiere: A1 – Joey Jackson – Kill Bill [AC003]

Animal crossing003

Manchester based collective Animal Crossing return with their third vinyl release.

The new school collective have been shaking up the minimal circuit with a series of DIY events around the UK, inviting the likes of SIT and Nu Zau to stunning locations. A refreshing aesthetic accompanies the outfit, with playful hand drawn sketches and an impressive effort in event visuals.

Sleek, delicate sounds combine an influence of the patient Romanian formulas, as well as honing a spirited UK attitude. Listen back to the first two releases on the Trommel channels, featuring local artists Nayve and Jake Flory shaping the crew’s blueprint.

Resident Joey Jackson shapes his first debut EP in this release. The Manchester-based artist has contributed to the crews output in a number of elegant remixes, as well as a slick contribution to Beeyou Records.

‘Kill Bill’ dials into twitchy, minimalist beats, fizzing over a moreish bassline and sensual vocal sampling. Sleazy whispers narrate a conversation praising music and the culture of record stores, whilst glassy modular-like blips drift overhead.

The palate of contrasting sounds casts a soothing vibe, working crisp, punchy drums with silky, sunrise friendly textures forming a warm, versatile mood. It’s the strain of casual, round-the-clock minimal that can keep a floor moving, regardless of the hour.

‘Fornicate’ delves deeper into this laid back, infectious approach, weaving a nimble bassline between soulful chords and delicate percussive work.

Ethereal atmospheres lead the way in ‘One Night in Shinkuju’, with dreamy chords and sleek Japanese vocals samples narrating the trip, before Joey links up with fellow UK producer Faze for a funky workout in the conclusive ‘Augustine’.
