New Birmingham based label XXX Culture present a classy four-track EP.
Three originals from an artist of the same name meander through swift, sub-heavy cuts, featuring a remix from Herck. Early support on the release comes from Arapu and Cosmjn, among others.
The mood of each track remains on a playful and uplifting vibe, boasting slick Snoop Dogg samples whilst delving into dubby, intricate sound design.
‘The Smoke’ and ‘Guys, I Want You To Meet Ray!’ host a slick garage attitude, weaving nimble basslines and sleazy drums, whilst ‘Archie Down Under’ explores a deeper tip on the flip. Sequences are clever and shaped around a clean, punchy aesthetic bound to come alive on a club system.
Herck takes things in a deeper direction in the premiered remix. Samples from ‘Archie Down Under’ are cut into wispy texturing caressing the ear, whilst fragile, ceramic-like percussion leads the way. Crisp hats and a firm kick cut through the mix, forming a solid foundation for the lucid, dream-state atmospheres floating overhead.
Melodies appear to form within distant textures, molding together into a web of polyrhythms, similar to the design heard his recently premiered work for Simple Things. Sounds are subtle, yet cryptic and pensive in mood, carving a mystical mood perfect for the after-hour dance floor.
