The prolific edit driven DRG series returns with their fifth instalment.
After four sold-out releases cementing a place in the bag of many of Romanian’s finest selectors, the somehow familiar yet innovative sounds of Dragutesku’s DRG imprint hit a sweet spot in DRG005.
Clever sample works frames the unique, vocal-heavy approach in the premiered A-Side. An addictive string sequence loops over elegant and snappy percussion, darting between playful vocal samples littered throughout.
Bringing nostalgic shades of hip hop and R&B together with slick Romanian flavours, the fresh angles explored by DRG offer an accessible medium into minimal territories. Recognisable samples cast a sense of familiarity, whilst maintaining a crisp and meditative aesthetic common with much of the community’s output.
Vocals grow naturally with the track, evolving from sharp snippets working within the rhythm, to full chorus’ forming a lucid breakdown in the latter sections. Boasting low-slung sub-bass together with extended breakdowns, DRG’s vocal workout is destined for dance floor gold.
The B side continues the peak time friendly fire, working spoken word vocals into a lean, groovy aesthetic filled with seductive energy. Both tracks spread extended durations across a full side of 180g coloured vinyl.
Given the privacy within the Unknown Artist statement, confirmation of the name behind each release remains a mystery, with minimal information surrounding the release. Track names remain generic, with minimalist scenic artwork accompanying the 12-inch.
Previous releases have seen continued support from the likes of Petre Inspirescu and Mihigh across the Romanian circuit, as well as doing frequent damage across overseas.
