Montreal minimal maestro Pheek joins forces with LA-based Kike Mayor for the second release of Ubiyu USA.
The Texan imprint cemented their place within the micro-house market late last year with an impressive debut from Melodie & Robert Roman, as well as remixes from Rowlanz, Halo Varga & Ra Mod.
A number of collaborative studio works have surfaced from the Canada-America duo Pheek & Mayor, working together on various sultry, minimalist projects for the likes of BodyParts Records and Metroline Records.
The first of the two classy after-hours cuts from UBU002 is A1 title track ‘No Chance’ and this leads out the release perfectly with rolling percussion, breathy vocals and a paddy atmosphere. Sounds are coated with a serene quality and a sense of space in the mix. Subtle, quirky hats dance over a tasteful bed of inviting, memorable melodies and soft, earwig textures swimming in lush reverb.
Numerous interesting, introverted ideas drift in and out of the mix throughout the eight-minute arrangement, flowing through a number of relaxed and often dissonant moods, without losing a sense of theme or context.
Progressions unfold with a seamless, live-jam like essence. Occasionally stuttering into brief breakdowns and neat hi-hat changes, the hypnotic charm of ‘11’ wraps you up for a cosy head trip.
The atmosphere remains relaxed, allowing for a simple, shuffling drum pattern loaded with character to strap into a perpetual loop, sharing the low end with sultry sub-bass ready to throb a club system.
Frenchman Doubtingthomas shapes a soothing remix of A1’s ‘No Chance’ on the flip, layering tripped out vocals over gorgeous plucks, whilst Chad Andrew & Just_Me lift the energy in their take of ‘11’. Rolling bass tones host ravey pads and a neat, reduced drum palate.
