Semi Delicious is opening 2023 with a cozy gathering of six nice tracks on their Various Artists release (first since SEMID010]. We had their sublabel A Life Time On The Hips recently, so, you should know the drill here. Today we’re having a track by Last Magpie – the name you may have slightly forgotten.
And I mean this – I think, I haven’t stumbled upon his name since his releases landed on Hypercolour in the first part of the previous decade. Discogs shows me a gap in his productions between 2015 and 2021, hope it doesn’t happen anymore. So, the track – “Release It” is one of those pieces, you’ll like from the first second because of its DJ-friendly percussion intro. A little bit of ravey sunset chords and we’re going into the central theme that should smash some festival soundsystems hard. Some paraiso vibes in the middle, the comeback of the main melody and an outro. Nothing fancy, just a solid tool with a drip of melody – my fav dish, to be honest.
The duo of Demi Riquísimo himself and Michelle Manetti are starting the record with a bang. Their “All I Need” is my second favorite track here with another favorite type – a stripped-down banger. It is continued by a breakbeat-house “Kraken” by Corbi. Can also easily be counted as an acid tune. Another duo of Lulah Francs & Nebari finishes the A-side with a piece that’s a little dreamier. Their “Don’t Make Me Wait” is full of vocals and invitations to some sunset dancing on the beach.
The B-side starts with NairLess, with an Aldonna-like roller “Swell”. Very pacey, kinda trancey. Can easily imagine, let’s say, Sally C, spinning this during her peak time. And the last one, but – sorry for that cliché – definitely not least – “Wizards Slippers” by the recent heroes of Ghost Recs – Jive Talk. The underdog of the EP, but will probably have A LOT of spins during this summer. And that moment on 3:12, uff!
