DMX Krew joins the EYA Records family.
The veteran UK producer reignites his EDMX alias in this fruitful four tracker. The London based label has been a staple within the new wave of machine-made club music since inception in 2018, pushing mean releases like the recently premiered ‘Exit Level’ from Innershades & Do or Die.
Both imprints EYA and Lonewolf have seen a fine streak of form in their experiments within ravey house, acid and techno territories. Founder and curator of the two labels Jos has contributed a number of his own sultry productions, on top of curating a sublime roster spanning across Europe, Russia and Scandinavian scenes.
DMX Krew feels like the perfect contribution to the label’s vision, with decades of experience working closely with hardware producing pensive shades of techno and electro. Each cut throughout the release leans towards an ominous, late night vibe, engaging zesty basslines with eerie atmospheres.
‘101 Thru 09’ is a testament to DMX’s timeless, no-nonsense approach to producing music. A muted bassline squirms across a dry 909 palate, explaining the track’s title nodding to the harmonious relationship between two of Roland’s classic machines, the SH101, and the infamous TR-909.
Patterns ring with quirky confidence, swinging dry hi-hats and a clean kick drum over the bassline with very few changes throughout. The arrangement leans towards a repetitive, tooly approach often opted by much of the more minimal roster, allowing for ideas to build, playing with tension and release, and crafted with DJ sets in mind.
The rest of the release meanders down a similar straight-up, no-frills path. Fierce ride cymbals hurl over a slippery low end in the trippy visions of ‘Options’, whilst the title track ‘Made In Japan’ boats a chuggy, slow-burning vibe.
‘Euler’ is the most energetic pick, rifling snappy snares and a twitchy chord sequence into peak time realms. The EP resumes EDMX’s prolific catalogue which began back in 2000 with his funky ‘MPC Trax’ electro series.
