Portuguese artist Cruz has been a pivotal part of the Lisbon (and wider community) for as long as we can remember. Another important cog in this machine is his bloop parties and record label of the same name. With the party arm of bloop being a haven for visiting house and electro dignitaries, so too is his record label. Incredibly, with the label already up to edition twenty-seven, this marks the debut of an artist very well-known to the label – Cruz.
As it is too hard to choose between each of the three tracks on Cruz’s vinyl debut, we pick up BLOOP027 on A1 “Interstellar Odyssey”. Like a sleek rocket fired into the unknown darkness of deep space, it is hard to believe that this is Cruz’s debut release as it bristles with the poised balance of a release from a seasoned producer. With sinister overtones washing over the track, Cruz crafts a punchy sound spectrum by way of the undulating bassline and the mean paddy bass tones that propel the track skywards.
With “Interstellar Odyssey” taking full control of side A, side B begins with more spacey adventures on “Milky Way Melodies” and with this impactful bassline and acid-dipped synths at his disposal, it is entirely possible that Cruz could reach this far into space. Rounding out this fantastic first EP for the Portuguese lynchpin is “Porto Supernova” and it is abundantly clear that there is zero filler to be found on this EP. Snappy snares punctuate the arpeggiating synth notes succinctly while the ghostly vocal that winds its way through the track. The only bad thing about this release is that it hasn’t happened sooner, we hope it isn’t too long before Cruz graces these pages again.
BLOOP027 from Cruz is now available to pre-order via Carpet and Snares.
