The joint imprint from Ibiza based artists JNJS (Jay Nortown & Jacobo Saavedra) has gone from strength to strength since the first edition with Triptil at the helm. Since that debut they have welcomed Jamahr, Matichap and now they add Cosenza to their family with their fourth installment. Offering two original works and a remix from JNJS, let’s dive into their latest offering.
We take aim at our pick of the release “Hot Paprika” and the lead track of the EP is jam packed full of crisp percussion and perfectly timed drops. This is almost secondary to the larger than life bassline that fills the sonic view nicely. Tidy chopped vocals pepper proceedings and as well as being made for modern dance floors there is a distinctly 80’s theme to be found here too. Producing a feeling of familiarity but at the same time moving the sound on is an ethos of VELVET.
“Puff” is equally groove heavy and will undoubtedly feature in JNJS’s sets that litter the best parties on the island at the moment. Disco stabs and acidic bass tones are injected around the arrangement to punctuate the party starting credentials that this label is based on. Completing the release is a remix of “Puff” and immediately they turn up the vibe dial and there is a distinct sense of urgency applied. The swing is shorter but most definitely present. Shortened conga hits and wiggling synths are added to their reworking to really turn up the heat. The endless groove is drawn out with the help of the original shimmering synth lines before the track is satisfyingly dropped back into the mix.
