Premiere: C2 – Pheek & Kike Mayor – Red [TOS012]

Maher Daniel continues to prove his driving force in the minimal scene. His affiliation with brands and artists across the world continues to shine brightly even in the face of a pandemic. The usually Barcelona based artist was on hand to head back to his home country as Space Miami got the nod to reopen its doors, bringing Ricardo Villalobos along for a weekend of epic proportions. And amongst the touring, Daniel’s label The Other Side continues to receive plenty of treatment. The latest features a rather large one from Pheek & Kike Mayor.

The two artists have collaborated before, most recently on Texan label Ubiyu. When the formula continues to be a winning one, it makes sense to keep going. So much sense in fact, EP turns to LP. Marigot comes with nine originals from the duo.

‘Red’ on C2 is a gentle, percussive roller. Murmured vocal whispers over a light groove that mirrors tapping rhythm, textured with drum sets in array. Trippy chatter takes hold, switching from English into German in its progression. Chopped into nonsensical outbursts, it is a stroke of madness that sounds both weird and delightful.

‘Margiot’ LP comes complete with a well-primed selection of the introspective, the melancholic, the weird, and the wonderful. It builds nicely across the wax. As the track selection skips forward from ‘Inicio’ on A1, the layered percussion strips back. Side D provides the happy ending, focused more on starting the party with positive grooves and the warmest of chords. The track list completes with the title track, a tribal roller pulsating with energy, saving the big one ’til last.
