Robert James takes aim at a pensive, breakbeat influenced sound in his new label Body Movement.
The inaugural release sees three high energy original cuts from the London based artist, concluding with the familiar warm-up-meets-after-hours flavours of Voigtmann on remix duties.
Each track explores a variance of moods whilst maintaining dance floor friendly foundations, shaping a versatile record fit for numerous stages of a set. The A1’s ‘Revenge Of The Wasp’ gives a nod to early Drexciya-esque electro, whilst the two accompanying originals flex James’ house and techno roots with clever basslines working with snappy percussion.
Subsequent boss Voigtmann reveals an impressive versatility to his production locker in the premiered remix of ‘Break Mode’. Honing a more reduced sound than the original, luscious breaks marry with a tranquil, Boards of Canada style chord sequence.
Similar weightless pads balance a menacing, floor read energy with a sense of calm throughout, sculpting the kind of track that would feel as perfect seeing in a closing sunrise set, as in a tone-setting warm up.
Sections arrive unhurried, gently releasing elements from the mix before eventually drifting into an extended beat-less breakdown in the latter portion of the arrangement.
