Having steadily grown with each release, J Gabriel’s Onysia imprint returns with another super slick and playful EP. Already home to a number of minimal’s greats in Akufen, Tommy Vicari Jr. the sixth release see’s a return from label head J Gabriel and as well as his own three original cuts, he also has brought in Audio Werner for some remix action.
We begin this article with the Audio Werner remix of “Phone Games” and when it comes to any production from Andreas Werner you can pretty much bank on it being some of the best music around. From the very beginning you know this is going to be a Grade A piece of music purely from the Rhodes stabs and curious hat / percussion groove. Add to that the funky, rolling bassline, the trademark AW swing and swagger and this is yet another entry in the German’s illustrious discography.
The original version of “Phone Games” is a slightly different beast in that the the bassline remains an ever present force in the track, as are the delayed fluted synth, but the energy is more insistent. J Gabriel’s undeniable vibe is instantly recognisable, optimistic yet mysterious, his use of strings and major chords always gives an uplifting feel to his tracks. The same can be said about “Mess Up”, with a tinge of playfulness but with extremely slick production throughout. Finishing with lead track “Vice”, the guitar plucks give this track an almost reggae feel to it. Which is not a bad thing as J Gabriel’s music will always stand out in a sea of glitchy minimal or micro house.
