Premiere: A1 – Italoboyz – Madam [SFICT016]

Italoboyz - Superfiction Episode 19 record art

Marco Donato of Italoboyz continues to supply the stream of productions coming out on their own London label Superfiction Recordings. This year marks two decades since the start of the shared project between Donato and his compadre Federico Marton.

The latest episodes from Donato have been surfacing thick and fast in recent months, as part of a refocused series. They continue to feature on our pages and for good reason – check out both Episodes #18 and #19 from earlier in the year.

Now we move in reverse, as the series is replenished with Episode #16. Featuring three tracks from Donato and a remix from Frankfurt’s Phil Evans.

‘Madam’ boasts a low slung groove, a temperate roller that flutters between short melodies and punching bassline. Sultry chord sequence strokes steadily, moving scales and pushing skewed notes. There’s an underlying softness to the melody, but it remains fiendish all the same.

The title keeps centre focus, echoed and metallic, calling out to the ‘madam’ for which this story is intended. Energy gently pulses from higher pitched stabs of synth, wrapped around the beat. Rhythm keeps steady with a simple, sharp percussion, layered with quirky mechanics fluttering cooly.

Phil Evans offers a brush of deeper house into the remix. Spacious bassline dances into a melody driven flotation. Gritty stabs keep a naughty feel, but the surrounding synths lift an atmosphere. Of course the madam remains at the heart, the vocal continues to dominate. As the melodies dance, warmer pads steer this one with feels of a pleasant direction.
