A clean and silky cut from Djebali as he delivers his groovy take on Gili & Mori Miller’s “Witches of Baghdad” for their latest outing on Pirka Records. “The Tipping Point” EP encapsulates flavours of the night as it indulges in the shadowy and the warm moments afforded by the light of the moon, with remixes from Djebali and Marko Nastic to boot.
First up is Djebali’s remix of “Witches of Baghdad” where he delivers a more melodic and playful take on themes from the original. A serious selection of pads swoon in from the off as basslines develop and the grooves make themselves apparent, all coming together for some euphoric, housey feels.
Track 1 on the release, “Mr Nightime” gets the party started as Gilli delivers a smooth slice of house-tinged goodness as swirling synths, meandering vocals and twilit pads combine over some heavy low-end that really brings the bump. Can hear this one landing nicely in the wee hours of the night right before sunrise, with its sublunary arpeggios and harmony parts coalescing with the moonlight.
Marko Nastic takes it up a notch with his remix of “Mr. Nightime” as he reimagines the track with an onus on rocking the dancefloor, and that it does! Militant drum machine usage and high-octane events drive the track as basses roll and bounce, well-primed for peak time plays, this one is sure to deliver every time!
Gilli & Mori Miller share “Witches of Baghdad” and “Freak Control” as a duo, the primer starting out with steppy drums and tight shots pave the way for the beckoning call of the witches, deep and trippy vibes on this one as all sorts of enchantments work their magic. “Freak Control” entertains an oddball bassline that underpins a host of swells, samples and other such oddities, keeping it cool and weird but nothing too freaky.
The EP is rounded off nicely with Gilli’s “Situation” – a stripped-back, minimalistic number that follows thoughtful structure to really deliver those climactic moments, excellent composition on this one, concreting the skills on show across the EP.
Another top release from Macedonian label Pirka, who have been going from strength to strength, having seen Vincent Casanova, Guy From Downstairs, Red Pig Flower, Varhat, Lost.act and more across various digital and vinyl releases, not to mention their free download series on SoundCloud that features some real nice edits of some classic tunes. We look forward to hearing what’s next from them, whichever form it comes!
