Having highlighted the fine work that Never Is Eternal have been producing on their last EP with Chech, we again visit the Barcelona based imprint to catch up on the rising work of Jacobo Saavedra. The power of digital label NIE is exemplified by Jacobo’s 2 tracker ‘Variety’ and also comes with a Mike.D remix to complete the package.
Lush breakbeats begin the forlorn journey into title track ‘Variety’ and with it comes expertly programmed percussion programming. Blooming pads perfectly hold the vibe and really help to build the suspense of the track. The funky bassline that joins the party will easily have a packed-out dancefloor transfixed until the 4/4 kicks come crashing in. The mixture of percussion-heavy broken beats and straight kicks is something else and so it is no wonder that the EP has been a firm fixture in the sets of DJs such as Direkt, Cosmjn, Zenk, Primarie, and CHKLTE.
On ‘Divus’ Jacobo is firmly on dancefloor duties and his funky basslines again take center stage. With a much more peak time focus being applied here the intricate grooves are stunning but never go too far that they take over the mix. Again, the combination and suspense of the musical atmospherics are paired with excellent drops. Mike.D’s remix of title track ‘Variety’ is a slightly more stripped back ethereal take on the original. Utilising washed out versions of the original vocals to great effect his remix tied in very nicely to the rest of the package and again points to a label that is very much on the ascent as well as the artists involved.
