Dr Banana and Lukas Wigflex head to Derby for the debut year of Discotech’s In The Park Festival.
The Derby-based collective has been putting the majestic midlands on the map in recent years. Tucked away next to Nottingham, Derby is the unassuming city bang in the middle of the UK.
Their events have become synonymous with that raw, DIY vibe at the heart of club culture. From the back of pubs to the Derbyshire Hills, abandoned jails and warehouses, the crew have been just about everywhere to throw wicked parties in the city.
Outside of events, their label has maintained a frequent output which has seen support from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Enzo Siragusa and Raresh. Their most recent release comes from Monika Ross, pressing five silky tunes to wax, plus a mean remix from Subb-An.
The next step in their evolution is casting their eyes on their very own venue within the grounds of Markeaton Park. Located only five minutes from the city center, the space will kick off with this highly anticipated ‘In The Park’ festival on Saturday, August 5th.
Contemporary UK garage legends Dr Banana and Lukas Wigflex have been invited to mark this special occasion, backed by an array of devoted local selectors.
Music will run from midday through to 10:30pm, allowing for the local resident artists to play extended sets to a healthy crowd. Tickets start at just £22 for this unique showcase run by a team with their hearts and priorities in the right places.
The team plan to pay significant attention to detail around the idea of creating an immersive escape from reality. Linking with local artists, the plan is to create an Alice in Wonderland theme ‘you will truly get lost in’, to quote the promoter Jordan Distan.
You can expect secret rooms, actors, performers and much more contributing to the surrealist vibe. On top of the dance floor powered by a hefty Funktion-One setup, there will also be a large chill-out area with several food vendors catering for the 10-hour session.
Back in the 90s and early 2000s, frequent raves headed to the lush countryside location which led to brands such as Smokescreen, Wireless and DiY and contributed to the evolution of dance music culture.
Derby is experiencing a resurgence of this buzz with local artists such as Josh Hvaal releasing music with the likes of Hot Creations and racking millions of listens on Spotify.
Discotech has had a huge part to play in putting Derby back on the map. Throughout the last 11 years, the brand has featured across Europe in some of the finest venues including 93 Feet East, Distrikt Leeds and The Zoo Project in Ibiza with further plans for Berlin and Amsterdam to come.
