There are very few discerning European dancefloors that have not yet been touched by the French crew Automatic Writing. Either by way of their well-known record label or by the trio DJ act of the same name.
The record label has seen highlight after highlight since the first edition in 2016 with a key combination of domestic artists both emerging and established such as Gab Jr., Charonne, and Sweely as well as bonafide stalwarts of the scene like Seuil, Akufen, Felipe Valenzuela, and Dorian Paic.
Again, this only tells part of the story behind the Automatic Writing brand as at its very core is three intertwined but very individual artists – Darween, Jacan, & Guillermo Jamas. As well as being the brains behind the on-point label output they also combine behind the decks to form a formidable DJ act that beam a steady stream of bangers where ever they play. This naturally led to Automatic Writing establishing itself as an unmissable events series that has brought the crème de la crème to Paris.
It is the events arm of Automatic Writing that is currently undergoing a remodelling and from the parent brand a new breed of events has been born. Branching off from the main label Automatic will see half a dozen events taking place every year in various clubs of the French capital (Trabendo, Cabaret Sauvage, Badaboum, etc.). Speaking with Guillermo Jamas he explained that this is not so much a rebranding but a new initiative, “It’s not really a rebrand but the launch of a new event brand linked to Automatic Writing. As a matter of fact, we have been throwing parties for more than ten years under various names or one-shot events and recently decided to bring all these initiatives under the same brand to make it easier for our community to join and support us.”
Clearly the focus on quality guests is never in doubt when the Automatic Writing team is involved but this first event really takes this ethos up a notch. For their first event on Friday, November 5th at Trabendo they have pulled out all the stops and plumped for none other than Margaret Dygas to headline the debut party. The Bass Queen will be assisted by the French artist and Discobar head honcho Lamache. As with all Automatic parties the Automatic Writing trio act will join the lineup.
With the events side providing a multi direction approach there is no change in service to the label’s output with Josh Baker primed and ready to drop his ‘Jam Sandwich’ EP mid next month. Darween went on to explain a little further, “No changes for the label. It’s one of the reasons why we decided to name our event activities differently. We want to keep the label as it is. Automatic Writing is already a label and a DJ act (Guillermo Jamas, Darween, Jacan) and I think it’s enough under one brand. With Automatic events we want to be able to showcase artists that stand out a bit from the artistic direction of the label as well and it could be a bit confusing for the label community.”
In addition to these more club based events there will be two bigger events that will take place outside of Paris (the first one being beginning 2022 at La Ferme du Buisson which enjoyed a fantastic summer run with Plein Soleil running events there). These much larger events will take on more of a small festival feel due to the type of line-up that will be presented. Jacan gave us a little bit more details on these, “The first event of this type will occur in January with two stages, one big room and a more intimate one with a lower ceiling room to offer two kinds of atmosphere and energy. We are working on an immersive scenographic development for both rooms to make it really special. We’re super proud of the lineup and we can’t wait to give you more insight on the artists invited. But first full force on November 5th with Margaret Dygas and Lamache!”
