Two friends and longtime lovers of electronic music continue their quest to explore and a span of sonic flavours through their label, MME Recordings. The platform kicked off proceedings with Cesare Muraca last year, and the imprint now hands the reins to Philadelphia-based artist Sweater for release number two.
This “Modern World” EP is a four-track venture through electro, breakbeat and bass-heavy grooves. On the premiere we’ve picked the aptly named “Escape The Future”, which itself sounds plucked from the future, beamed straight into the present.
Despite the title suggesting to stay well clear, its booming bassline makes it all the more appealing. Warped synths splurge all over this one, a sonic wormhole where tight stabs lead to mysterious melting chords. Warmth creeps in but mostly it’s tinkering with the dials, heading deep into other worldly terrain.
There’s an even split across the other edges of the wax. Over on the A side, ‘Mighty Morphin’ and ‘Body Scan’ both spacious and uplifting. Deep, bubbling electro follows the gears as they shift into full speed ahead. Balancing warm up energy with the more driving.
Over on the B-side, Hydro Pump lands with raw textures, tempered by fluttering percussion and brighter touches that give it a lighter finish. A smart contrast to its counterpart, to round out the record.
In fitting with the MME vision, genre conventions are there to be explored and stretched into new territory. Sweater brings the heat future focused, and loaded with character.
