We are back in Norway as the Det Gode Selskab train keeps pushing forward, and they have another forward-thinking EP on the horizon. This time, the magic comes courtesy of German artist Philipp Boss, and the two could not be a better fit as he flexes a swathe of original tracks across the full length of the DG008.
Philipp is a bit of an OG when it comes to synths and throughout this entire EP there is a multitude of different sounds and styles to pour over, but it was the myriad of contrasting sounds on “Blau Zwei” that captivated us. From the basic yet impactful bass sound, to the abrasive yet warm lead bass tones and of course the glacial lead synth notes. Boss navigates the variety with ease and with each sound being so prominent there was always the perfect amount of space for each element at all times. Of course this is as much down to Philipp’s mixing skill as much as it is his ear for what fits together.
With Norway having such a rich history in synth-led music “In My Arms” speaks to this lineage and with lush disco overtones galore there are even more finely rooted nods to speak of. With much of his previous work, there are more than a few excellent musical ideas and influences all vying for attention in this track but they are conveyed with such swagger that it is almost unsettling. We jest of course, but don’t just take our word for it, this is already shaping up to be one hell of a record.
Flipping over to side B and there is even more gold, as if you thought this might not be the case. “Summerpark” is a more subdued affair with vocoded vocals, a nicely arpeggiating bassline, and crunchy snares all make for a daytime weapon for those more electro moments. DGS008 finishes strong with another showcase of Boss’s love of squelchy synth work and “Anxiety” is another contender for the top EP track. Tuned toms hit hard alongside more crunchy percussion and a subtle plucked sound akin to a mandolin, but we will leave the identity of this sound unrevealed.
