Doodle is the brainchild of Brooklyn, NYC based artist Jorge. As a record label, this is so far a space for said artist to casually release mostly his own tracks. His second release is imminent and while you might consider doodling to be a rather absent-minded task, the results here are worth the lack of direct thought.
The sounds of Jorge and his doodles begin in his hometown of Madrid. His Spanish routes shine brightly on the opening track of his second EP ‘No Napkins’. In keeping with his previous EP ‘The First One’, the record is compiled around a theme and this time, the focus is food. ‘Croquetas de Jamón’ could quite well be an ode to the artist’s favourite tapas.
It’s a fitting first to the four tracker. Stripped back percussion keeps a poignant beat, a perfect metronome encasing a bending bassline. Groove oozes casually while eery synths breathe a mysterious energy deep into the track which remains grounded by the soft, warmer notes chiming in between. Top that off with some techno melodies and you’ve got a nice upbeat contrasting with the deeper flavours around it.
If you have more of a sweet tooth, fear not as you’ll find ‘Carrot Cake’ also on the A side, a punching little beat laced with a hypnotic flair. Shirish joins the party on side B with his own ‘Intangible Appetite’. A deep, stripped back number that bursts into a flurry of melody unexpectedly. The record is complete with a collaboration between the two, the playful, robotic and sometimes driving ‘Green Banana’.
Jorge’s ‘No Napkins’ EP will be available from 11th July. Of course its casing comes bearing a rather nice doodle itself. Purchase the record from Juno or deejay.de.
