Up to now, Ukrainian imprint Jerelo Records has been manned solely by the label’s namesake founder Jerelo, but the time has come to welcome new blood to the fold. Also known by his more longstanding moniker Joss, the Artreform boss clearly has an ear for the sublime dancefloor-focused side of Rominimal and dub techno, let’s see how newcomer Cirkel Square fairs with his “Malevolent Harmonis” EP.
Beginning with Cirkel Square’s A1 offering “Kronos Reckoning” and even from just the opening bars, the sheer power contained with these beats is startling. The synergy between each carefully crafted element is impressive and while the deep probing bassline and thudding grooves there is a sublime undertone at play courtesy of the airy synth pad that envelopes the track. As well as the finely detailed dynamics the beauty of this track comes from the coupling of the delicate vocals with the robust grooves.
This is a theme effortlessly carried through to the rest of the EP with “Hades Symphony” painting a more stripped back picture. The bassline is reduced to only a few musical steps and in the process further reducing its footprint to more dub techno territory. Heading over to side B and “Ares Beat” breathes acid all over the bubbling bassline with a subtlety that is often not found from a 303. Completing the package is “Persefone’s Whisper” and Cirkel Square finishes strong with a track full of life and more than enough energy. This is a theme that runs throughout the EP and is almost tangible at times.
