Premiere: 5 – Gabri-L – Doesn’t Really Matter [DGSD004D]

For the fourth and final instalment of Norwegian crew Det Gode Selskab’s “Jack’s Favourites”, they have perhaps saved the best for last. Previous editions have enjoyed the skills of family members Henriku, Karl Fraunhofer, A:G, Tod Louie, as well as visiting dignitaries Dandy Jack, Bassam, and Rub800 to name just a few that have stepped up in the name of Jack. Let’s see how this particular story concludes.

Det Gode Selskab is very much focused on continuing to build on its ever-expanding close-knit family and Melbourne-based Gabri-L is going to fit in just fine in Tiger City with “Doesn’t Really Matter”. The break-heavy groover bursts out of the speaker with an outrageously bumpy bassline and a slick flow that will inevitably result in all sorts of action on the dancefloor. Years of honing his sound via his afterparty staple The Breakfast Club has given him the skills to weave the often unintelligible vocals in and out of the bobbing groove to great effect.

Moving on to recently added DGS family member Philipp Boss whose “Badesalt” begins with a kick of epic proportions but is soon tempered with lush keys and the gritty, funk-packed basslines that Boss is so well known for. Ignacio Morales is next and his offering “Delayed Advance” treads a more minimal approach with a mystical twist.

Shakèd is well known around these parts and it is a welcome sight to see him back in action for DGS with “Fanatiek”. Straight away he stamps his authority on this VA with slick riddims and a sublime looped airy string that soon gives way to a rounded bassline. Working in the jacking remit nicely with organ stabs and clipped vocal samples produces even more highlights for the release.

Heading towards the business end of the release and Italian hotshot and DGS regular Phill Prince is next to inject his signature energy with “Lost The Key”. A force of nature behind the decks it is clear that this is carried back and forth between the studio too as the infectious grooves are a mainstay throughout as are the paddy synths that hang nicely in the upper parts of the track giving that airy vibe that give those sweet day time vibes. Completing the Jack’s Favourites series is a bit of a curveball by way of SanAndreas’s “Under The Moon” with a slice of classic liquid drum and bass. Agenre that until now had not been explored on this series, but a fitting sign off none the less.
