As intimated a short while ago Italian artist LEON has launched his brand-new party brand and record label FUTURA. It is the musical output we are concentrating on today and if the first EP is anything to go by we will be in for a treat. He will be bringing into the fold quite a wide cross-section of artists which include exciting new names such as Koko, Harry Wills, Ben Balance as well as established names such as Mark Ambrose, Janaret, and Youandewan. However, with this wealth of raw materials at his fingertips Leon chose to lead from the front and it is own track that kicks off FUTURA.
The original version of ‘Get Back Up’ is full of attitude and the riddim heavy jam leans more towards hip-house meets peak time tech house banger. Jones 2.0’s rhymes tell the tale of recent happenings in Leon’s own life, “This track was made in a difficult moment of my life linked to the pandemic and the lockdown, I imagined that people needed motivation, not to fall into depression and together we looked for a text to give hope and energy. I wanted to create a more electro-house sound with some Detroit references.”
To give the release a full spectrum of styles KOKO’s remix has chosen not to use the vocals in full but bed them in deeply with the rest of the track. This remix does however utilise the upfront bassline and floaty pads to conjure up a heaving terrace party that Leon is well known for commanding. The fade-out and vinyl effect during the main break is also a nice touch that This is a style that KOKO has down and pat and a quick look back at his remix on LOCUS will add strength to this quite unique style he has built.
Completing the package is the remix from Frankel and Harper which plays on the urban side of the original by turning in a mean garage flip. Processing on the vocal trims all the fat and injects even more swagger. The harsh bassline and scything drums fit this track perfectly and this duo has hit the 90’s garage vibe perfectly. If this is the caliber of EP’s that we can expect and the associated parties are going to be just as tidy then Leon has a serious string to his bow in the making.
