London collective Modern Funktion continue to showcase up and coming talent from around the UK. Phill de Janeiro sits at the helm, a Brazilian born artist with a vision to bring together the next generation of players. And alongside his own productions, the talent being uncovered only compliments the sweet sounds of deep house. For the next one, the flavour shifts a little. The latest set to drop invites from up North, welcoming Joejoemojo with a three track EP on digital.
The Leeds artist has been firmly gripped by the sounds of UKG. There’s a clear focus on the dutty beats of garage, with cheeky breaks to boot. A determination at the machine has delivered on a bunch of productions that specialise on whomping basslines and his offering for Modern Funktion continues the trend.
‘You N_Me’ makes for a real sweet blend between house grooves and deep dutty. It starts with a punching kick that will become the vessel for smooth, stretchy bass. Wrapping around the rhythm, this delicate plunge into the electronic fixates on the futuristic. Tasty synth work dances tantalising bleeps over a rougher edge, a tinge of dark on a serious beat.
Percussive force smacks a steady pace, hard hitting drums bring a hefty dose of swing bar to bar. There’s little time for melodies, as this moody little mover plods through garage, breaks and backspin. As the beat is lifted, the break in rhythms allows for just a moment, to stretch in some seductive highs.
This cheeky but determined groover can be found on Joejoemojo’s Wicked EP. Purchase yours via bandcamp, out since yesterday.
