Sid Mehani has been a pivotal part of the Algerian electronic music scene since he started spinning records back in 2007. Although now based in Berlin, ties to his North African routes remain strong. And now more so than ever, as he finally launches his own platform Groove On The Carpet. Combining the sounds of his home country with house, techno and beyond.
First on the wax is Wave Particle Singularity, previously on our pages back in 2021. Also based in Berlin, his introduction to techno rhythms began way back in his teenage years. Inspired by the percussive movement in his birthplace of Oran, his taste for the beat led him down the road of underground sounds. Making him a fitting starter for the first chapter of this new label.
On the premiere we have the closing track, ‘Illogical Swinger’. The pleasant little bopper leads with softly squashed chords, dancing around organic squints akin to the sounds of a chirping bird. Bassline punches the groove as the pads prime, twirling short bursts of highs that remain forever grounded by the dubbed out beats below.
The rest of the EP is just as pretty. ‘Zarbeeya’ starts it off with a feel good house track, floating with Saharian chords and soft, tapping percussion. Chugging beat leads the charge on ‘Maghzal’ whilst continuing the kinder notes, touched by feint brushes of acid. Over on the B side, moodier tones manifest in ‘Ghardaia’, lightened by atmospheric immersion into the harmonies of minimalistic groove.
