If you’ve seen Italian DJ Quest play, it’s somewhat hard to believe he doesn’t already have a label. The Berlin-based artist has had a meteoric and thoroughly deserved rise in the past few years by uncovering forgotten gems from the past that span any and every genre. Gritty breaks and electro is sliced and diced with bouncy ’90s house and ethereal techno, whilst there he’s not tied to any singular genre or strain of music, that’s a certain sense of playfulness and party spirit that accompanies the records he spins.
With a distinctive sound already carved out, the possible sonic landscape for Quest’s label, La Nota Del Diablo, feels infinite. Stepping up to christen La Nota Del Diablo is La Decima Vittima, a trio consisting of Ruben Lombroso and Alexander Folonari, known for their excellent Shampoo Douglas moniker as well Pablo Arrangoiz, known for his Mason Jar project alongside Bruno Schmidt as well as his solo Goiz alias. Throughout their different projects, all three have maintained an outside-of-the-box approach to tried and tested genres such as minimal and UK garage which makes them a perfect fit for the labelhead’s musical vision.
It’s not difficult to imagine A1’s Fava Del Demonio weaving it’s way into a Quest set. The bloodcurling screams and twitching bass tease throughout and swiftly sharpen the knives of the track, but the pumping drums and swinging bassline create the aforementioned playfulness although no matter if you’re aboard Hoppetosse or in Closer’s morning sun, Fava Del Demonio is sure to spin some heads when that bassline is shocked by that signature scream.
Also featuring from the La Decima Vittima boys is Epidemia, showcasing Maranza’s penchant for the zany side of underground music with it’s murky melody and vocals which switch up to a cheeky organ solo throughout. On the B-side, whispered Italian vocals and spiralling pads fuse together for some chilling breaks on I Nostri Debitori. Rounding off Primo Tempo is Porco Maledetto, whilst fit for an eery scene in a horror movie, the chilling melody and choppy breaks are sure to ease their way onto dancefloors in the near-future.
Primo Tempo is available to purchase from Deejay, Juno, or any good record store.
