One of the most in-demand brands in the underground, Automatic Writing, returns to label business with Parisian rising star Olivier Romero. Having recently appeared on Get Traum, Into The Woods, and Full Scale, Olivier is already right up to speed and growing in power with each release. This time, his original works are backed up by a remix from another star in the making, REFLEX BLUE.
It is the REFLECT BLUE remix of “The Past Future” where we start our journey, and the impressive Italian artist doesn’t alter the game plan too much here too much. Where the original focuses more on the shuffling groove and sub-bass, REFLEX BLUE centres his iteration on a new attitude-packed bassline. The vocal snips and fuller vocal samples that give Grandmaster Flash vibes are brought to the fore, further dialling up the swagger.
Flipping over to side B and Olivier’s second original “Trip” and taking the energy levels down from the previous tracks a groove-laden journey awaits. Floaty vocals help to guide us through the track as the shimmering bell like synth hovers high above. Completing the release, we head back up to more peak time territory with “That’s The Future”, and the angular percussion certainly drives the track forward. Pitched down robotics vocals fit perfectly with the blown bass tones and the higher BPMs that send the closing of the EP into peak time mode. The energy levels are certainly peaking by this point, but there is still room for Olivier to add some musicality to proceedings.
