Robert James is back shaping the sounds of his label Body Movement. In a relatively short space of time, the wax has already featured Voigtmann, Harry Wills, LVCA & SIDD (we premiered this one here) and much of Rob’s own productions. The latest instalment sees the label boss return alongside longtime Leeds pal Burnski, together known as North Phase.
The duo first reunited on Body Movement 002. ‘Zone 1’ gave us a glimpse into a (these days) different musical direction, chugging deep with the raw sounds of minimal breaks. To have a full EP in collaboration gives plenty of space to showcase the sound and this is clearly one they’ve been building up to.
We’ve taken ‘Look Around’ on the premiere. A deep bassline bubbles underneath the breaks, rolling percussion textured with shaking bells. Dark electro swallows bars with snarling synth lines, while rhythm feeds the groove in defined swing. It’s a big, infectious beat made for massaging sound systems in its cruise through dub-lit garage.
Minimalistic chords signal the breakdown, paving way for a dreamy vocal echoing in subtle rave rising over bomb drops of bass. The build is faintly twisted in flavour, blending the dutty and the cosmic.
‘Eternals’ on A2 is a little more constrained, stripped back bassline teased with a soft, filtered vocal. Oozing with groove and movement. Over on the B side, ‘Sun Waves’ moves into the melancholic, cleverly shifting in time and tempo. Maher Daniel works his treatment on this one, drifting pleasantly through atmospheric break.
L.E.S.S EP will be available at Juno, due for release on 19th July.
